Last month’s article in Natural Awakenings discussed why hypnosis is better than will-power for quitting bad habits, and this article discusses the benefits specific to quitting smoking.
The dangers of smoking are well-known to most people, yet many that decide to quit find it too difficult to stop smoking on their own. To quit this devastating habit, hypnosis can be used alone, or in conjunction with other therapies such as patches, gum or other suggestions offered by a doctor.
Here are three important ways hypnosis can help:
- Help neutralize cigarette cravings, especially for the first few days. There are certain suggestions that can be given in hypnosis that may leave the client simply not wanting to smoke. For example, the client could be repulsed from the taste or the smell or could feel that the desire to be healthy outweighs the cravings, with the suggestions in a hypnosis session.
- Help reframe the triggers that have people wanting to reach for a smoke. For example, if a person reaches for a cigarette with their cup of coffee—that coffee alone can taste way better than it being corrupted with the taste and smoke of a cigarette. Or if their friends at work are going out of the office for a cigarette break, a person wanting to quit smoking could still join the others, but choose to take deep, energizing inhalations instead, while still getting social time and break with co-workers, thanks to the changes realized by hypnosis.
- Help to reduce stress, which is why many people smoke in the first place. Hypnosis helps individuals reorient issues that they find stressful so that the need to cope by use of substances is greatly reduced.
Hypnosis could be a great way for those who smoke to start off the new year emancipated from the habit of smoking. Luckily, there are many well-trained hypnotherapists certified in smoking cessation.
